Hello, fellow collage enthusiasts! I’m Anna Lena Feunekes, an illustrator who specializes in creating magical worlds using upcycled scraps and a bit of imagination. Today, I'm going to take you on a whimsical journey to create a stunning hydrangea collage using the simplest materials—scrap paper, a touch of paint, and a dash of pencil magic.
gather your materials
Before we dive in, let’s gather our humble supplies:
Scrap paper: Gather pieces with various shades of blue, purple, and green. Old magazines, wrapping paper, and even junk mail are perfect.
Paints and pencils: These will add extra texture and depth to your collage.
Scissors and glue: Your trusty tools for cutting and sticking.
start with a sketch
Begin by lightly sketching the outline of a hydrangea bloom on your base paper. Keep it simple! A loose, circular shape with clusters of smaller circles will do.
paint papers
Paint your papers in the colors you want to use for your floral collage. It doesn't have to be neat - in fact, working a bit messy brings texture to your paper that I think you will end up really liking!
cut and assemble
Now, for the fun part—cutting! Snip your scrap paper into tiny petal shapes. They don’t have to be perfect; in fact, the quirks make them charming. Start layering these petal pieces onto your sketch, gluing them down as you go. Play around with overlapping to create depth.
add texture and details
To bring your hydrangea to life, use a bit of paint to add shadows and highlights. A light wash of white paint on the petal edges gives a delicate, soft look. Then, grab your pencil and sketch in subtle veins on the petals and leaves to add realism.
final touches
Take a step back and admire your work. Does it need a little more depth? Perhaps a splash of darker blue or a gentle dusting of purple? Feel free to add these finishing touches until your hydrangea blooms right off the page.
