Learning the art of floral collage: tips for beginners

Greetings, budding artists! I’m Anna Lena Feunekes, your guide to the world of floral collage. Starting out can feel like stepping into a garden of possibilities, so let’s explore some beginner-friendly tips to help your creativity bloom.

start simple

Don’t overwhelm yourself with complex designs right away. Begin with a single flower—like a daisy or a tulip—and focus on capturing its basic shape and color.

experiment with textures

Mix and match your scrap paper to create texture. Use corrugated cardboard for a rugged look or tissue paper for a soft, delicate feel. The more you play, the more you’ll discover what works for you.

embrace imperfection

Your collage doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, the charm often lies in the unexpected—crooked petals, mismatched colors, and all.

layer, layer, layer

Layers are your best friend in collage. Start with a background layer, then add your flower, and finally, sprinkle in details like leaves and stems. The more layers, the richer the result.

avoid common mistakes

Watch out for over-gluing (it can cause wrinkling) and avoid cutting everything too neatly. Collage is about embracing a bit of chaos!
