Today, I'm thrilled to share a behind-the-scenes look at my illustration process with you. I'm an artist and illustrator who specializes in food and children's books illustration and I've recently created a hearty pumpkin galette illustration for my Patreon, where I regularly share my art projects and behind-the-scenes content. In this blog post, you can watch a time-lapse video of the entire process, from the initial sketch to the final touches. Grab a cup of tea and join me as I bring this delicious dish to life on paper!
Sketching the Concept
Every illustration begins with a concept. For this pumpkin galette, I wanted to capture the rustic charm and mouthwatering appeal of the dish. I started with a rough pencil sketch on plain paper, focusing on the composition and the main elements. I sketched out the flaky crust, the vibrant pumpkin filling, and the garnishes that add that final touch of flavor. This initial stage is all about getting the basic shapes and layout right.
Collage illustration and painting
Next comes my favorite part: adding color. I used Holbein Acryla Gouache to paint the illustration. This paint is perfect for achieving rich, vibrant colors with a matte finish. I carefully layered the colors, starting with the base tones and gradually building up the shades and highlights. The pumpkin filling needed to look warm and inviting, so I blended various shades of orange and yellow. For the crust, I mixed browns and ochres to get that perfect golden-baked look.
Digital magic
After the traditional painting was complete, I scanned the illustration into my computer and opened it in Photoshop for final touch-ups. Here, I adjusted the colors, enhanced the highlights, and cleaned up any imperfections. Photoshop allows me to fine-tune the illustration, ensuring it looks perfect both in print and on screen. I also added a subtle background texture to make the galette stand out even more.
The final bits
The last step is reviewing the illustration as a whole and making any final adjustments. Once I'm satisfied with the result, I share it with my Patreon supporters. This pumpkin galette illustration is not only a beautiful piece of art but also a visual representation of the delicious recipe that my patrons can try at home. Seeing the positive feedback from my supporters is always incredibly rewarding.
